Srila Prabhupada - A Truly Inspirational Being

His Divine Grace A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, or Srila Prabhupada (pronounced sreela prabhupard), as he was most affectionately known, inspired millions when he travelled from his home country of India in 1965 at the age of 69, to the West to teach the ancient principles and practices of Krishna (God) Consciousness.

Srila Prabhupada was taught these principles as a child by his father and in 1922 after meeting his Spritual Master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami, was instructed to dedicate his life to teaching them, and to deliver them to 'english speaking countries'. Shortly after this his Spritual Master passed away.

In the years that followed, Srila Prabhupada remained in India and worked tirelessly to teach people about their eternal relationship with Krishna (God), writing commentaries on numerous scriptures including the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, and beginning the 'Back To Godhead', magazine in English, which is still being published worldwide today.

Srila Prabhupada left India on a boat to America in September 1965, with very little money, but much determination to follow his Spritual Master's final instructions. Whilst on the boat he suffered two heart attacks, but remained determined to continue his life's mission.

Once in America, Srila Prabhupada faced difficult times, but nevertheless continued preaching to whoever would listen. After several months his few followers rented a shopfront and apartment in New York so he was able to to hold regular meetings. The number of followers grew, as people from all walks of life were drawn to his meetings, and found both inspiration, and what they regarded as 'missing' from their lives.

In July 1966, Srila Prabhupada established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness — ISKCON. His aim was to use the society to promote Krishna Consciousness throughout the world. In 1967, he visited San Francisco and started an ISKCON centre there . He eventually sent disciples all over the world to preach its message.

Srila Prabhupada continued to work tirelessly to promote Krishna Consciousness. Despite his advanced years, he slept very lttle, dedicating his time to writing the many books that he authored or commented on, which have now been translated in over fifty languages.

As the the world's largest publisher of books in the field of Indian religion and philosophy. His works include Bhagavad-gita As It Is, the multi-volume Srimad-Bhagavatam, the multivolume Caitanya-caritamrta, The Nectar of Devotion, Krsna: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Teachings of Lord Caitanya, Sri Isopanisad, The Nectar of Instruction, and dozens of small books.

In eleven years before he passed away in India in 1979, he travelled the world over ten times, and established 108 temples worldwide. His last wishes to his disciples, whose number rose to over five thousand, were that they followed in his footsteps and continued the preaching and spreading Krishna Consciousness all over the world.

Srila Prabhupada inspired millions by living a simple life, and leading by example. He continues to lives through the instructions of his books, and in the heart of his devotees.
